FAQs
When does the course start, and what are the session dates?
The course runs for seven weeks. Sessions take place on Tuesday evenings, from 29 September to 10 November inclusive.
What are the timings?
The warm-up starts at 7.45 p.m. and sessions run until 10 p.m. We recommend arriving at 7.30 p.m. for the first session to allow time for registration.
Do I need any singing experience?
Not at all. Complete beginners are very welcome, as are people who already sing or are returning after a break. The coaching and learning materials will help everyone develop from their own starting point.
Do I need to be able to read music?
No, you do not need to read music to take part. You will receive sheet music, but audio learning tracks will also be provided so that you can learn your part by listening.
What if I am nervous?
That is completely normal, especially if you have not sung in a group before. You will be welcomed on arrival, surrounded by other singers and supported throughout the evening. Nobody will be put on the spot.
Can I come and watch before deciding?
Visitors are welcome at our regular rehearsals. If you would like to watch before joining the course, please contact us so that we know to expect you.
What happens when I arrive?
You will be welcomed and registered before joining everyone for a relaxed group warm-up. We will then help each participant find the voice part that feels most comfortable. There is no audition and nobody will be asked to sing in front of the group. Once everyone has settled into a voice part, you will be given the music and audio learning tracks for the two songs. Over the seven weeks, we will learn the songs together, build confidence and prepare for the final concert.
Will I sing alone?
No. You will always sing as part of the group, with plenty of voices around you, and you will never be expected to perform a solo. Our Musical Director may listen to you sing a couple of notes in private, but only to help place you in the most suitable voice part.
What kind of songs will we sing?
We will learn two pop songs arranged for four-part male voice chorus. We don't want to spoil the surprise, but they are well-known songs that you are sure to have heard!
Do I need to prepare or bring anything?
You do not need to prepare or bring anything. Most people bring a bottle of water, but tap water is also available at the venue.
What should I wear?
There is no dress code. Just wear whatever feels comfortable!
Where do I park?
On-street parking is available close to Bellfields Youth & Community Centre. A small amount of parking is also available at the venue itself.
Is there a drink or social element afterwards?
Yes! The chorus is a very sociable bunch, and many members can usually be found catching up in the local pub after rehearsals.
What happens at the final concert?
At the end of the course, participants will perform the two songs they have learned alongside Surrey Fringe Chorus at a free concert for family and friends on 10 November. You will sing as part of the full group, with plenty of support around you. Details of the concert venue and timings will be provided during the course.
Do I have to take part in the concert?
The concert is the shared goal of the course, and we hope everyone will take part. If you have any concerns about performing, please speak to us. You will be singing as part of the group and will not be expected to perform alone.
What happens after the course ends?
The whole seven-week course is completely free, with absolutely no strings attached. If you enjoy the experience and would like to continue singing, you will be welcome to find out more about joining Surrey Fringe Chorus. Regular membership carries a monthly subscription, and full details will be provided before you make any decision.
